John,

From here in New England, I'd say a better question is "Where is the band?" 
I could hear Tom every once in a while, but not well enough to copy for any 
length of time.  I thought my antenna was broken until I answered someone's 
CQ  down the band.  Even he was in and out, so we had to abandon the QSO.
