Hello;
Unfortunately the internet has taken lots of the zip of looking at a ham station and talking across the country.  We all know that ham radio can help when the net is down but that is fairly unusual and newcomers don't get the thrill that we once did.  I think the only hope may be in digital modes and showing folks how the radio and computer work together.
