I presume Mr. CHESEBROUGH had some interest in the CHESEBROUGH-POND
company, maker of "Pond's Cold Cream," one of my Grandma's favorite
preparations. Don't ask me how I remember the name of the company, but I
can still picture a large jar of the stuff sitting on Grandma's dresser.

Robert Chesebrough was born in 1837 and by the Civil War had a large
refining business
in Brooklyn, where many oil-related enterprises settled. Around 1870 he
developed
Vaseline -- a word he apparently coined himself -- an oil-based product
designed to dress
wounds and moisturize skin.
