Fred,

I'll assume you are in a mode other than ssb.   I usually set to fsk and hit 
the footswitch to ke the rig.    A single push of any of the buttons givs  a 
reading: F power, R power, or swr.

Are you getting no reading, or  is it saying something goofy?

Even with no RF applied, just hitting one of the buttons will make it talk. 
Does it work this way at all?
