This helps a lot, and I think I'm going to go with something a bit cheaper,
and more manageable with Jaws.
Someone on the VR Stream list referenced a good basic dictionary that comes
on a CD, and that you can load into any computer you want. I think the cost
is approx $9, which will be good enough for me at this time. It certainly
will beat that old clunky Braille vest pocket dictionary from the 1960's
that I've been using all these years! (grin)

The language master is a self-contained electronic dictionary and the
special edition has full speech. If you've ever seen one of those
electronic spell checkers, it looks like one of those. Kind of like a
calculator. Has a qwerty keyboard which gives you access to a full
dictionary, (I forget which one it uses,) and also contains several word
games including hangman. I think it can still be obtained even though it's
been around for many years but your best bet is likely something software
based as you've already surmised. There is also dictionary dot com but
that, of course, you can't put on the stream. Hope this helps. lou
