As far as the thin wire goes:  Some people  strip off  more than an inch of 
the insulation and then  fold the bare copper back on it's self several 
times to  make a  larger  end to crimp in the pin.

I prefer to use  a few inches of heavier wire, like number 14 crimped into 
the pin and then crimp   a butt splice to connect the 14 wire to  the 
thinner wire.   On a device that pulls a lot of current, you would have to 
consider voltage drop in the extra splice, but  you are dealing with a 
fraction of an amp  here and it  is no problem.  I have a lot of low current 
stuff set up this way and have done away with a lot of wall warts.
