The 480 has a control head that is connected to the radio by a cable.  Can't 
get much smaller than that.rest it on your stomach, lay on the couch, take a 
nap.  What's better than that?
As far as the tuner, what's your antenna?  How much power, what bands?  How 
far off resonence is the antenna with out a tuner?
