Hi Jerry,
Here is what it said on one of the later pages on eham reviewing the Yaesu 
FT897D transceiver.

For those interested, the excellent freeware FT817 Commander software 
(including PSK31 deluxe) works well with the FT-897. A couple of the 
indicators are

obviously incorrect (such as power setting) but things like frequency 
display and setting work perfectly. Unfortunately don't forget the above 
limitations

of when the CAT interface cannot be used.
