Possibly you are talking about very old versions of OSR2 (Win95b), I have version 4.10.1423b (which I got in October of 97) and have sufficient RAM available in both DOS sessions and straight DOS.
DOS window: 611K
Straight DOS : 624K
Using himem and emm386 NOEMS
About the only DOS game I've played that required a huge amount of conventional mem was "The Legacy" which required 610K. There are probably others, but I don't recall ANY that needed 624K, much less more.
See ya!
