I too, have had great results for years with Malwarebytes. I pay the nominal fee of $9 a YEAR for daily updates to the database and for the constant monitor function. Malwarebytes prevents malware from installing in the first place. Puts a fence on the hill instead of an ambulance in the valley. I highly recommended it.

"Detecting" Malware after the fact strikes me as similar to not
detecting it at all. In most cases I've seen, Malware was granted
permission to install by a careless click, which is understandable, as
some Malware authors are very clever.
For most cases, a combination of MS Security Essentials and
Malwarebytes will suffice, along with a dose of common sense.
