Vaccination will become mandatory for workers in fields like medicine, law enforcement, etc., where there's a lot of personal contact with a large number of folks--and where it's really important that these folks are well enough to go to work. I just don't see how WHO and the folks that manufacture the vaccine will be able to match the strain and produce enough by the time seasonal flu rolls around again in the northern hemisphere. Lots of folks are going to be watching Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and other developed countries in the southern hemisphere this summer. Conventional thought says these nations will be bellwethers for what's to come this winter in the north.

CDC Public Affairs has been stating that the curremt H1N1 strain has been following the usual seasonal pattern. They're starting to back-pedal from that assessment as it appears this bug is somewhat more virulent than the average seasonal flu--though the symptoms are markedly milder. This virulence is the worrier.

Mags, I had put California in front of (A)H1N1 in my earlier post as it was appearing that the virus was first seen (in North America) in California rather than Mexico. Generally, it's named after the country where it was first isolated (e.g., "Spanish" flu, "Hong Kong" flu, etc.). Political Correctness has reared its head in this arena and WHO is reluctant to label it now due to protestations from Mexico. Some of the more cynical epidemiologists are calling it "NAFTA" flu as it seemed to show up first in the countries signing the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Kyle

I don't see how it could be mandatory for adults - for kids, maybe but not
adults. We already have mandatory childhood vaccinations for those kids who
go to public schools.
