Try reinstalling all drivers from the CD that came with your motherboard. 
Possibly the thumbs need different generic drivers from your other USB devices.

Removing the thumb drive while Vista was in the process of shutting down 
may have corrupted the driver. First check in Device Manager to ensure 
there are no remnants or error icons left and that no additional drives are 
showing.

If you only have an all-purpose "recovery" manufacturers disk, that task 
won't be so easy. Either you'd need to locate the drivers on that disk, if 
possible, or go to the mobo website to download its drivers. Maybe Dell can 
help, if the machine is new.
