Was it as simple as a static discharge from the plastic case/button?

Subject: Re: Sony Dream Machine Talking Clock Radios

If she hadn't reported the popping sound, I might think so. There is just
slightly more space between the edge of the button and the edge of the
case, so I was wondering if flesh could have come in contact with the inner
electrical circuits, but repeatedly playing with the buttons, I found
nothing out of the ordinary. But that was the only thing I noted as a
variation between her radio and mine (I have the same model in my bedroom).

Sure is puzzling. I guess I'm going to take it back over to her apartment
and try it on a different outlet.
