Regarding your last question I'm no expert on rivets but it is my
impression that they work best in shear.
I would also ask your engineer if he wants the field-formed end
preserved or the other one. I'm not sure how easy it will be to tell
the difference. There could be slight differences in the work hardening
of the two.
Getting back to your "samples for what?" question is he going test the
shaft of the rivets or the heads or both?
