Not sure what rig you are using, but here is what I do on the TS-2000:
Say the DX is on 14.001 and listening up 1. Tune to 14.001 and hit the A=B
button, this puts both VFO's on the same frequency and mode. Tune up the
band to 14.002. Now one VFO is on his TX and the other is on his RX
frequency. Hit the split button to put you into split operation and hit
A/B to reverse the VFO's. Now your RX freq is back on the first VFO of
14.001 and your TX VFO is on his RX freq of 14.002.
The fact that you can't key in split makes me wonder if you are not getting
both VFO's into CW mode. Hitting the A=B button will ensure that both
VFO's start on the same mode and freq. Worked K5D 8 times last week, so it
works well for me here.
