I can't speak much for the USB cable as I've never used it for video,
but if it's anything like HDMI at all, you want high-quality shielded
cable to ensure good signal. Back when HDMI cables were still very
spendy, I bought two six foot cables from Best Buy so I could return
the more expensive one if the cheaper one was sufficient. The cheaper
one was $70 and the expensive one was $160. I kept the expensive one.
The difference was night and day. The better cable had more shielding,
thicker wires, and used gold plating where the wires terminated in the
connector. You could actually see the clarity change in the video
between the two cables.

Much of the same difference will be seen in the splitter. I've had to
replace every one that the cable company has provided me because they
were cheap. I got horrible signal out of them (realitively speaking).
Good shielding and high quality connections make a world of
difference.
