Ruth,
Lucky Jim is the one to read. I have read about half of his output, not
including his stint writing James Bond. Kathy asked me why I bothered.
He is not exactly enduring as a writer and may be best known for his wry
humor, drinking, womanizing and his son, the writer Martin Amis. Other
than that I am not sure why I have read as much as I have.
On the claim that the Irish taught the Scots the process of
distillation: "The idea of a medieval Irishman inventing a rather
complicated technique like that of distilling, or anything at all for
that matter, is hard to credit."
If you have a book that you absolutely cannot read then give it away. If
not to a friend, to the local thrift shop.
