I've heard it said that we often view God the same way we viewed our own
fathers. This works out great if we had a good father, but what if we
didn't. What if our father didn't have time for us, wasn't there for us,
didn't show us affection? Would we then judge that since God was a father
then He was the same. I think we all have a sort of dictionary in our
minds. This dictionary carries our own special definitions of love, family,
forgiveness, worth, and so on. Sometimes like a file on our computer our
dictionary is corrupted. It is times like this that I ask God to show me
His definition for love, forgiveness, and family. Love after all, isn't
something one must earn, or try to demand or hold on to. It is given, and
received. Forgiveness is as easy as asking, no hoops to jump through. I am
accepted because I am God's creation, not because of what I do, or even more
importantly what I do not do.
I think a lot of fathers today think their children need things, bigger
houses, more toys, the latest and greatest whatever, but really they need
time, attention, and love. You can't buy those things at Waklmart.
So today I am praying that God show fathers what the true definition of a
father is, not the tv definition, not the movie screen definition, but His
original definition. That definition will change our families and even our
country.
