Tom,

The Amp in the MC60A is needed on the newer Kenwood rigs.  On my TS2000 I 
have to have the mic amp on to have enough mic gain to use vox.  There is an 
impedance switch on the Mic and the lower impedance setting will give you 
better bass response though the output of the mic will be a little lower. 
The lower impedance setting also reduces RF getting in the mic, but 
grounding the mic case does the best job on resolving that problem.
