First Dx As A Novice.
I had a crystal on 3746 at the upper end of the 80 meter
novice band. Some school friends hung out there so I often hung
out on that frequency. One night, two Canadian side band stations
were having a phone QSO right dead on my receiver frequency. They
were loud. I listened until they signed and called, on CW, the
loudest of the two who was a VE4 and to my amazement, he answered
me and still on side band. We talked for a few minutes and the
next day I had a schedule with a friend 45 miles away who just so
happened to live in the same town as our school for the blind. I
was at home when I worked the Canadian. I told my friend about it
during our schedule and he said, "I heard the whole thing because
I was listening to the frequency at the same time." I figured
this made me a big gun, I mean, working a foreign country and
cross mode and everything. Plus, it was a rare VE4, don't you
know, and frankly, I believe that was the only Canadian I ever
worked during the 7 months I was a novice in 1966.
