Hi Pat.

I find that I cannot manage the initial setup menus either, but the ones 
that you use to set things on a day to day basis aren't too bad.  Icom 
gives a subtle cue when you hit M1 because the length of the beep is 
different for that one, and once you get used to that, the common settings 
are manageable.  The only thing that I found to be really unmanageable was 
setting PL tones, but honestly, for urban environments, the VHF/UHF section 
of the 706 sucks anyway.  It is a lot more prone to desensitization from 
strong signals than any of the other radios in the house.  It's ok if you 
live in the country, but it is a crappy radio for weak signal VHF/UHF work 
in an urban area.


I found the HF performance to be satisfactory, especially with the addition 
of a CW filter, and I like the AT180 tuner in general, although it isn't 
quite as robust as some of the aftermarket auto tuners.
