Here in the U.K. it goes back to WW1 and was introduced in order that the
farmers could optimize on daylight.

Mike,
    The history of daylight savings time goes back to WW 2 I believe.  Its 
just one of those things that once its done, its to get rid of.  Wikipedia 
might have an interesting article on this.
