1. A vintage article republished

Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) has issued a challenge to its
members that ten percent of new hires be persons with disabilities. See:

www.ten20action.ca

I am happy to announce that CME has chosen to republish one of my articles
on the ten20action site, "The Costs and Benefits of Accommodating Employees
with Disabilities:"

www.ten20action.ca/?action=site.show&lid=9&desc=What's%20New&nid=13

Written 11 years ago, some details are a little out of date, but the
basic message remains the same: Accommodations are not necessarily
expensive, add value to the workplace, and result in significant benefits
for a company.

The article also appears in its "usual place" on cantoraccess.com:

2. Two new articles to be published soon

I am putting final touches on two new articles. Both will be posted
on cantoraccess.com in December or January:

Voice-enabling a Web-based Application: Lessons Learned

Synopsis: This paper highlights the lessons learned while scripting
approximately 300 voice commands for a complex web-based application.
The scripting project was part of a return-to-work plan for an employee
with a disability.

Adding Keyboard Functionality to Google Maps with Macros

Synopsis: Google Maps is a mouse-intensive application. There are
hotkeys for performing common tasks, yet for individuals who cannot
use or have difficulty handling a mouse (or other pointing device),
Google Maps is not accessible. The goal of this project was to improve
keyboard access to Google Maps. This paper illustrates the process that
resulted in hotkey macros that are reliable, fast, easy-to-use, and
easy-to-remember. Furthermore, several of the macros perform better
than the built-in keyboard commands that they replace.

3. Six presentations in 2008

CSUN 2008 - Pre-conference workshop

for persons with disabilities. Learn about macros that are activated by
pressing hotkeys and typing words; customization techniques that will save
you time and effort; and software tools that make it a snap to automate
repetitive tasks. Each of these easy-to-learn techniques can be implemented
in five minutes or less.

CSUN 2008 - General session

Voice-enabling a Web-based Application: Lessons Learned

General session. 10 - 15 March 2008, Los Angeles, California. Time and date
TBA. Host: Center on Disabilities, www.csun.edu/cod

NaturallySpeaking works well with popular word processors, e-mail programs,
spreadsheets, and browsers, but less well with non-standard and proprietary
applications. Voice-enabling these programs usually requires scripting. This
paper highlights the lessons learned while scripting custom commands
("macros") for a complex web-based application.
