I just read Phil's post. Perhaps I should have gotten an IC-7000; who
knows. I haven't started doing anything with the memories in the FT-950.
The CQWW CW DX contest was my first serious CW contest with this rig after
Sweepstakes. 499 QSO's, 394,000 points, 22.5 hours out of the possible 48.
No amplifier, no packet or telnet spotting. Twenty meters was by far the
best band for my setup, with 315 QSO's, 91 countries and 28 zones. With
some sunspots it would be much more fun.
On CW, the FT-950 doesn't go narrower than 100 Hz, but that's enough. In a
contest you usually want 200 or 300 for your narrow setting, and 500 Hz or 1
Khz for a wide setting. This was a big step up from my R4C. You can enter
frequencies on the rig's keypad, or enter the last couple of Khz digits in
N1MM Logger, the contest logging program I am now using. I'm sure that
K4LTA made a lot more QSO's than I did; he is another blind contester who
was active.
