If you really want to go new, I'd look very hard at the IC-718. If you don't
mind looking used, Kenwood TS-570, still TS-440 and TS-450's around used
rather inexpensive and if you're worried about running power you can keep
them backed way off though I think I'd stay away form the TS-440 for that,
if I recall from having them, it's very hard to regulate the power on that
like my TS-830 but there are alternatives out there and features wise you
get what you pay for, but honestly from limited experience with one, the
IC-718 is plenty of radio for the casual user in my opinion and the TS-570
as well. There are lots of options, you don't need to spend anywhere near
the cost that guy at the store told you, if you don't mind going used, you
won't have to spend $500 on the radio though getting the voice ship if there
isn't one might be a little more but even they're pretty cheap. I was going
to put a feeler out there to see if I can get a good price, good for me, for
my TS-570 but looking at what they go for now, I don't think I'll bother. I
didn't want to sell it anyway I was just toing to put a figure out there to
see what happens and if it goes I'd get something else for a backup, I have
only touched it to move it since I got my TS-2000.
