Dine-out cards and a list of Seattle area restaurants that are willing to
serve gluten-free menu items will be available. The Dine-Out cards are available
for $1.50, and are official plastic dine-out cards that fit perfectly in
your wallet, and are a great help to the chef preparing your food. Coyla and
Maureen always travel with theirs.
We are also in the beginning stages of developing a website. We need your
ideas about what you would like to see on the website. Please also consider what
visitors to Whidbey Island may want to see if they go to our website. If
you are interested in participating in brainstorming ideas about the website
content, please contact Maureen Wild at [log in to unmask]
(mailto:[log in to unmask]) . A meeting will be scheduled in June for those interested.
The May 18th meeting had several people participating in learning about
other types of non-gluten grains. Coyla Shepard, Gayle Torgreson, and Maureen
Wild all presented information about millet, quinoa, buckwheat, teff, montina,
and sorghum. Samples of teff, buckwheat, and millet were provided by Bob's Red
Mill. Gayle Torgreson of Alternative Grains in Coupeville provided samples of
teff flour and montina. A special thank you to The Star Store for providing
free samples of gluten-free cookies.
The group is also in need of a host/hostess for each meeting. It would be
nice to have a few interested persons so the duties can be rotated month to
month. The responsibilities include contacting a local grocery establishment for
donations of gluten-free products to share at the meeting, ensuring adequate
supply of name badges, greeting new attendees at the meetings, ensuring
participants are signing the attendance sign-in sheet, set-up refreshment table,
securing a member to bring a gluten-free dish, including the recipe to share.
Please contact Coyla Shepard for details at 360-321-4083.
We are also requesting membership dues to help towards paying a small
speaker's fee, administrative costs and supplies, and building a library of
gluten-free reference material to loan to members. Although payment of membership
dues is not required for participation in the group, it helps to build the
group's financial resources so events around the community can be held. For
payment of dues, please contact Sydney.
Please contact the following individuals if you have questions or ideas to
