Hi all. I was dx hypothyroid in 1996 (undx probably much longer), and dx
celiac in 2006 (absolutely undx MUCH longer!). I'm getting a sestamibi scan on
my parathyroid Tuesday morning. My Vitamin D has been low (currently under
20, can’t remember – memory being an issue with hyperparathyroidism), my
calcium was normal, and then low; my albumin was low, then normal, etc.
Doc is making sure there are no adenomas typically found with low Vitamin D
and HIGH calcium because my parathyroid hormone (PTH) is somewhat
elevated (82 and 120) which indicates it's trying to normalize calcium levels.
We believe because I'm Vitamin D deficient that I likely have "secondary" and
not "primary" hyperparathyroidism, but I'm getting the scan to be sure. (Great
site for info: www.parathyroid.com).
I'm curious if anyone has had this test, and had side effects from the
radioactive medium used: "tech99m" or technitium.
Any anecdotal stories regarding hyperparathyroidism are welcome.
