you just set the PF button on the radio to read S meter instead of
frequency.
You then have to use the enter button, tapped twice, to get a frequency read
out, unless you have a mike with extra  PF/function buttons.
I just built a box a while back that allowed me to use a microphone without
PF keys, and that allowed me to use all four possible PF or function
features via swiches on the box.
I think it's menu 51 where you set the function of the Radio's PF button.
The s meter setting is one up from the default frequency readout setting.
