hey butch:
have you tried regular leads on that meter?  I think you can use regular
style leads, since the extra wire in the stock leads that come with the
talking meter are there to support the lights and the remote talk button
only.
I seem to remember thinking the same thing when i first got the meter, but I
tried another set of old style leads and they worked fine, just no light and
no remote talk button.
