Hi.

Not a stupid question, and the answer is, yes, if the fence is in good 
shape and not all rusty.  A friend of mine mounted his Hustler vertical on 
the fence, and said that the fence was definitely his friend.  Generally, 
if you can get a clean mount that is free of corrosion, any large metal 
surface is only going to help you when it comes to providing a ground plane 
for an antenna--just like the discussion a couple of months ago about using 
chicken wire except that I suspect that the fence will outlast the chicken 
wire!
