Hi, folks.
My trusty home-brew G5RV seems to have finally bitten the dust, after about
8years of service.
Therefore, I am thinking of replacing it by purchasing a comercially-made
one, and would like to tap into the wisdom of the group regarding what best
to do.
I understand that the G5RV's made by a guy named Kerry in, I believe, South
Carolina, have gotten real good reviews on e-ham, much better than, for
example, the G5RV's sold by MFJ.
Here's the description of his deluxe G5RV:
Deluxe G5RV Antenna
Very High Quality Antenna
WHEN ONLY THE BEST WILL DO. The standard length 102' G5RV antenna. This
antenna covers 80 - 10 mtrs. and is superior in quality to all other
manufacturers antennas of it's kind. Amateurs who have used the True-Talk
antennas agree that they are the top antenna available today. Check out my
feedback or the True-talk reviews at http://eham.net, it says it all. The
antenna is made using quality materials and is manufactured with great
attention to detail. This antenna consists of 102' of #12, double covered
stranded copper wire. The center insulator was designed by WA2NAN and
incorporates a strain relief for the ladder-line.(a weak point in other
antennas). The end insulators are heavy duty two-way pull, double U -type
and support the antenna very well. The ladder-line is 31' of 300 ohm HD
copper-clad steel window-line, (NOT TV. TWIN-LEAD). The feeder is connected
to 70' of high quality RG-8X coax and includes a silver-teflon PL-259
connector. All connections are soldered and covered with heat-shrink tubing.
This antenna comes completely assembled and ready to install. Wire will be
green or blue, depending on inventory. Check out the reviews at
http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/2202. For questions contact
[log in to unmask] . Payment is with money order, cashiers check or paypal.
The shipping is via US postal Priority Mail. I use only Priority Mail, it's
fast and fairly priced. Send me your zipcode for shipping costs.
Price of this model $75.00 plus $ 12.60 shipping in the US. For outside the
US. Send me your address Handles 1500 watts.
Does this antenna seem to be over-priced?
My other option would be to go with something like a Carolina Windom, but
I'm not sure of the pros and cons of that kind of wire antenna in comparison
to the G5RV.
I'd also be willing to consider other wire antenna suggestions as well.
I would like to cover 80 through 10 meters, with my TS480 which has the
built-in auto-tuner.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, and 73 from Tom Behler: KB8TYJ
