I would recommend the ldg z-100 ultra from w4rt.
This is an ldg z100 modified with internal batteries.

There is an article on the handiham web site which details putting a piezo 
buzzer across the green led.  I think the green one.

This gives a beep when the light is lit.
If solid light swr below 1.5.  If flashing light below 2.5

I think that's how it goes.
The buzzer cost me $0.95, and a friend did the mod in 15 minutes.
