I ultimately did exactly that.

The Astron and the battery were connected to a little transfer switch box 
that my son and I designed about  5 years ago when we re-did my shack, and 
once I completely bypassed the switch-box, even the Astron worked better and 
I got maximum output from the IC746.

So, I guess my Christmas present here is that I don't think I have to send 
anything away.

Don't know what I'll do about the transfer switch box my son and I made, but 
at least that doesn't cost me much to correct somewhere down the road.

Now, I have a lot of time to make up in terms of working with my new TS480.
