Subject: "Breaking Down Barriers" 2003 Student Disability Issues Conference
Hello, everyone,
The Students for Barrier-Free Access, University of Toronto is organizing
a student disability issues conference for Saturday, October 25, 2003, to
be held at the U of T St. George campus.
The conference, entitled "Breaking Down Barriers" 2003 has the following
goals:
1. To educate the attendees on general issues affecting students with
disabilities;
2. To provide a survival guide to post-secondary education for students
with disabilities;
And,
3. To broaden and influence the debate on barriers to education by
engaging the student perspective.
The conference will start in the morning with a round table session
identifying barriers to education, and will conclude in the eveing with a
follow-up session on strategizing around the removal of barriers
identified. In between, there will be breakout sessions around two broad
themes: A "Survival guide" (including topics on health and self-care,
disability, sexuality and body image, financial assistance and
accommodation technology) in the morning, and "Self-advocacy" (developing
a campus disabled students' movement, graduate and professional education
and employment, combating classroom attitudes and the ODA) in the
afternoon. There will also be a panel discussion on student experiences.
More information on the conference will be posted as it becomes available;
registration information and the conference website should be up within
the next few weeks.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Best regards,
Mahadeo Sukhai
