ECONOMIC FACTORS IN CELIAC DISEASE We determined that a gluten-free diet
involved considerable burdens to patients. Our study in several major
cities throughout the United States revealed that gluten-free food was
much less available than its regular gluten containing counterpart in
different types of food stores. In this we compared the internet,
upscale gourmet shops and average grocery stores. In addition,
gluten-free food was more expensive than its regular gluten containing
counterpart. The lack of availability and financial burden placed on
patients may well be an impediment to adequate dietary management of
celiac disease. This is in direct contrast to countries that support the
gluten-free diet as part of a pharmaceutical benefit. This work was
published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, October 2007.
MAJOR REVIEWS Major reviews on celiac disease were published in the New
England Journal of Medicine and Autoimmunity. Editorials were published
in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the American Journal of
Gastroenterology.
