*Top Boston Doctors Enter Cooking Competition
*National Foundation for Celiac Awareness to host Gluten-Free Cooking Spree
with Boston doctors and chefs to raise awareness of celiac disease BOSTON -
Prominent Boston-area doctors will take over the kitchens at the Back Bay
Events Center on Saturday September 13, 2008, to compete to cook the best
gluten-free meals. The doctors will be paired with top chefs from the Boston
area as well as either a pharmacist or dietitian to aid them in their
gluten-free cooking quest.

The event is hosted by the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA)
and will be held at the Back Bay Events Center (180 Berkeley St., Boston,
MA). Event time is 7:30-10:00pm.

The Gluten-Free Cooking Spree is an event that joins together the medical
and lifestyle aspects of celiac disease by educating both the medical and
restaurant communities. Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disease triggered by
consumption of the protein 'gluten,' which is found in wheat, rye and
barley. When a person with celiac disease eats foods that contain gluten,
an immune reaction occurs in the small intestine that results in damage to
the villi, making them unable to absorb certain nutrients from food. Left
untreated, celiac disease can lead to cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis,
infertility, pregnancy complications, skin irritation and other autoimmune
diseases.

There is NO pharmaceutical cure for celiac disease and the only treatment is
a gluten-free diet. This means avoiding all foods that contain wheat, barley
and rye.

To improve awareness of celiac disease amongst the medical and culinary
communities, NFCA has created five teams of three participants each to be
challenged to create a gluten-free meal that will be judged on taste and
presentation.
