That depends on the "Q" of the rig, some are extremely sensitive, some are 
not, as far as band width. I'd say, rule of thumb, 100Khz, and if on SSB, on 
let's say 40 meters, that covers most of the upper portion of the phone 
band.

ok as a general rule of thumb assuming there is one, how often should
one retune on the same band?
some people say every 10 kc some say every 100 kc so I'm really not sure
which is correct.
