mine usually measures a brand new AA battery around 1.6 volts.
That said, some measure around the 1.3 range as well.
I'm not sure if you can actually find a battery that is dead on 1.5 volts.
1.2 seems a bit low though.
I think you can calibrate the meter some  how but I can't remember how.
It might be one of the three flat buttons under the display that will reset
the meter and calibrate it.  It is supposed to have auto calibration, but
there is a calibrate button I'm pretty sure.
You can also touch the leads together on the dc voltage setting and press
the talk button...this seems to set it at zero at least if not actually
calibrating it.
I always do that before testing caps or resisters...it seems to prevent bad
readings from occuring.
have you replaced the batteries in your meter lately?
