When I was in college, I ran a no seeum antenna and my 26 gage wire was 
always being broken by the wind or something, and there were many times 
where my coax was hooked to nothing and I experienced the same things that 
you did, Howard!
I'm glad now that I can run a rugged antenna that holds up in the wind, but 
then, you never can tell when something is going to break unexpectedly!
