Anthony,

Actually, you can press whatever mode you want (VFO, memory, etc) without 
pressing the 3 key, but you'll remain in the B radio.  Of course, if the 
mode doesn't work on the B radio, which is the case for Call Channel, you'll 
get an error beep when you press that button.
