They had  large mess of knobs for all kinds of function as well, not to
mention a gear driven digital display to 1 kHz.

I haven't ever seen one of those kiddos, but would like to have.  My
understanding was that they were very sensitive and selective; a friend
of mine used to rave about his all of the time.  I seem to remember that
they required pretty furniture, though...
