Bonn, Germany - Today, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) presented
Dr. Robert Jackson with the Paralympic Order. Dr. Jackson, who was instrumental
in the early days of the development of the IPC, as well as Paralympic Sport in
Canada, was awarded the Paralympic Order in 2005.

It has been argued that Dr. Jackson was the founder of the Canadian Paralympic
Movement; after noting the absence of a Canadian team at the Tokyo 1964
Paralympic Games, Jackson along with several others founded the Canadian
Wheelchair Sport Association in 1967 in order to send a team to the Tel Aviv
1968 Paralympics. Dr. Jackson became the founding President, a position he held
from 1967 to 1972. Following this, Dr. Jackson became Chairperson of the
Organizing Committee for the Toronto 1976 Paralympic Games, giving up his
medical practice for six months to do so. Dr. Jackson also served as Director,
Vice President and President of the International Stoke Mandeville Games
Federation from 1972 until 1984.

Dr. Jackson was presented with the Paralympic Order by IPC Governing Board
Member and former President of the Canadian Paralympic Committee, Patrick
Jarvis, at a special event held in conjunction with the Terry Fox Hall of Fame
in Toronto. The event was organized by the Canadian Foundation for Physically
Disabled Persons and attended by over 700 elite corporate business people
including the guest speaker the Hon. Jim Flaherty, Finance Minister of Canada.
Dr. Jackson was inducted into the Terry Fox Hall of Fame in 1993.

The Paralympic Order is the highest tribute a person connected with the
Paralympic Movement can achieve. It honours persons who have made important
contributions to the Paralympic Movement, have illustrated the Paralympic ideal
through their actions, have achieved remarkable merit in the Paralympic sporting
world or have rendered outstanding services to the Paralympic cause.
