My 97 year old aunt has had a stroke, and a bad fall. She is gravel-tough
- child of a Depression minister's household - although she used to go out
night-clubbing and dancing. Put herself through law school but "I still
managed to have a lot of fun" she says.
Other day, my sister visited in the morning and I came in the afternoon -
an unusual confluence. I couldn't have stayed more than 120 seconds,
literally - she's happiest just to read the paper and stare into space.
After I left, she told the nurse: "Lock the door, don't let anyone else in.
You know, when you're dying, people are just an inconvenience."
