Howard,
Even though all the controls are on the head, all connections for the
microphone and key are on the front of the radio. That effectively limits
the distance between the radio and the control head unless you're willing to
use long cables, which may introduce RFI and hum problems. I wish they had
put more connectors on the head, but they would probably have needed a
thicker cable to do that.
