Chris,
You're right about the menu setting, but the key combination you described
gets you into Remote mode, at which point you can turn cross-band on or off
with the appropriate DTMF tones. If you want to get into Cross-band mode,
you turn the radio off and turn it back on while pressing the Tone button.
You also need to have each transceiver on a different band, or you'll get an
error beep when you try to enter Cross-band mode.
