Tom,
Some operators actually like having lots of fan noise in the background to
suggest that they have lots of high-powered equipment around. Back in the
good old AM days, a friend of mine got someone to rig up a hefty relay that
made a good solid clunk when he hit the Transmit button.
I once visited a TV station where a friend of mine worked as an engineer.
He let me switch the plates on on the transmitter, and you should have heard
the crash when the relays kicked in. It shook the floor. I wouldn't have
minded having that relay in my shack. Probably not a good idea for
apartment dwellers.
