I think the main difference in radios having the monitor function is those 
designed for mobile don't, such as the 706.  Also, they seem to add that 
to the upper end models.  The 440, and 450, for example didn't have the 
monitor function.  I don't like the way they do it on the 2000, you have 
to change the volume each time, no way to just toggle it on or off as it 
was on the 850.  I'm surprised the 480 has it, but glad it does.  That is 
really quite a radio for the dough.
