Icom is marketing the D star technology in the commercial radio sector...not
sure if they have always done this, but we recently had an Icom D star rep
from Icom canada attend one of our club meetings.  He wasn't there to sell D
star to local hams at all, but was attending an oil and gas industry
conference where he was marketting D star for use in the oil field.
It does have some fairly significant potential in certain aspects of
communications in the oil and gas industry.  They are always looking for new
and better technology in that industry, or even very specific technology to
meet a need that may not exist else where.
So, I suspect it may have a limited survival rate amongst hams, or at least
most hams who aren't as technically savvy as others, but it may not be in
the same boat when it comes to the commercial side.
