Hi.
Are you sure that wasn't an Icom IC502? It sound like one. Actually Icom
made a couple of portables like that. They also had the IC505, which I
almost had. A friend of mine in college had the IC502.
Yaesu also made a halfway decent portable for 6 meters which had FM, SSB,
and CW. That was the FT690, which was a 3 watt portable. They later
followed that with the FT690 MK II, which would put out power equivalent to
a mobile radio when put on a 13.8 volt source, or it would run 3 watts on
the optional battery pack. Yaesu also made 2 meter and 70 cm versions of
these radios. I had the FT790 Mk II, and I can truthfully say that it was
the only piece of Yaesu radio equipment that I ever owned that I really
liked. These radios are not accessible, though, but in the 1990s when I
owned that radio, accessibility wasn't yet an issue for me.
If Kenwood ever did make a 6 meter portable, I've never run across that one
in the 29 years that I've been licensed, and I like to horsetrade enough
that I've owned too many different radios for me to count anymore.
