You guys there have it easy.

Here in the U.K. the issue is with shared pedestrian and cycle ways, even
some towns where motor vehicles and pedestrians share the same carriageway!

When it rains I can guarantee getting wet from spray from vehicles on the
road, in my short walk to work!

    And that is so true.  Anyone notice that pedestrians are losing some 
protection?  Here in Oregon they passed a law allowing drivers to come 
closer to us, keeping only a 6 foot distance.  And boy do they like seeing 
how close they can come.
